Searching video

July 26th, 2006 Comments off

Howie Jacobson sent me this article about a new company called Dabble that`s aspiring to create a new kind of search service for video and other multimedia.

Part of the company`s strategy is to include social networking info to help people find and identify videos to watch.

It`s early on this topic, but they`re doing some interesting things that bear watching.

Refresher course…

July 22nd, 2006 Comments off

I  just published a short article that`s a basic overview and tutorial for people who are coming late to the Internet video party.

It covers a lot of the fundamentals that are easy to overlook once you find yourself deep in the complexities of technical issues. I`m glad I wrote it, just to help remind myself of the critical issues.

You might find it to be a worthwhile read:

Monetizing viral video

July 6th, 2006 10 comments

The commercial potential of the viral qualities of Internet video is interesting, but overrated.

It’s an appealing idea – sort of like buying a lottery ticket for a $1 and making $1 million – but there are several major gaps between the fantasy of viral video marketing and the reality.

The rapid spread of ideas in the form of e-mails and videos is a reality. It happens…

How can this power be harnessed?

Is it bunker time for Microsoft?

July 4th, 2006 11 comments

One way to get your point across is to scream it.

Microsoft’s CEO Steve Ballmer is one of the great "screamers" of the computer industry.

(Historical trivia for folks interested in the intricacies of history: Ballmer’s Dad was  a "neutral" Swiss during WWII who got a great job with Ford in the US right after the war. His job right before that was translator for Nazi war criminals at the Nuremberg Trials. True story. Look it up.)

There may be more to this than just interesting historical trivia…

Don’t ask “the experts”

July 2nd, 2006 Comments off

I love collecting quotes about the future from "experts."

Here’s what one of the most powerful men in Holywood had to say about  television in its early years:

"Television won’t be able to hold onto any market it captures after the first six months. People will soon get tired of staring at a plywood box."

– Darryl F. Zanuck, head 20th Century Fox

Today, there are still a lot of people who think Internet video isn’t a serious threat to televsion.  I just met a bunch of them at an advertising conference in New York. All I can say is "dream on."

Simple, powerful

June 29th, 2006 Comments off

If you’re looking for a way to get started with video on your web site – or even if you’ve been at it for a while – I’ve got something simple and powerful to recommend for you to focus on:

Get testimonials.

Testimonials are a way to let *other* people demonstrate your product by telling their story of how it helped them.

Printed testimonials are powerful. Audio testimonials are even stronger. But nothing beats video testimonials.

How do you get them?

ClickZ’s Online Video Advertising Conference

June 27th, 2006 Comments off

People who attend the System Seminar often ask me how I come up with so many great speakers for the event.

It’s no secret.

I’m constantly researching new trends and that often includes attending industry conferences.  It’s a huge investment of time and money. Sometimes it pays off, but I’d say on the average I’ve got to kiss 50 to 100 frogs to find one prince (or princess.)

Eleven days ago (June 16), I attended a one-day event called the Online Video Advertising Forum sponsored by ClickZ. (ClickZ is an online publication for Internet marketers – corporate Internet marketers.)

JVCs brand new tapeless video cameras

I went to the ClickZ conference on online video advertising in New York last week. (I’ll be reporting on it in some detail later.)

The most interesting thing I saw on my trip to the city was a display in front of J&R Music, the legendary music and electronics shop just across from City Hall…

Fun with food

June 13th, 2006 11 comments

This is one of those things I’m surprised no one has done this yet (or maybe they have and I just haven’t seen it.)

Here’s the premise:

By far, the biggest expense involved in producing video for the web is producing the video. No matter how you slice it, the time and money involved are significant

Currently – and who knows how long this will last – there is a lot of online video on a wide variety of topics being made available absolutely free.  Just cut and paste some code and presto! You’ve got fully produced video for your web site. It’s that easy…
