They laughed when I sat down

December 29th, 2005

"They laughed when I sat down at the piano,
but when I started to play…"

It’s one of the most famous direct response
headlines of all time.

Ad legend John Caples wrote it when he was
still in his twenties.

It was an ad for music lessons and not just
any music lessons, but a new-fangled, modern
age version: music lessons delivered by mail.

Just two days ago, a consortium of music
industry publishers launched the 21st century
version of the music correspondence school.

Be prepared to pick your jaw up off the floor.
And take notes.

This one is a PhD level course in how to combine
the twin powers of interactivity and video.

Not something you can copy on a shoestring,
but something to study and learn from.

Workshoplive is very interesting but I have a question about about the real meaning of interactivity.
If you are in a room face to face with someone then you can question them, get feedback and truly interact. But with a computer you are not really interacting you are just choosing options – the computer is quite “passive”.
How far away do you think we are from “smart interactive” programs, ones that are like flesh and blood teachers who can intuitively pick up on our mistakes and act to correct them?

The video adds a ton to this web site. I would think that the video of the guy thanking you for visiting their site should start automatically when you enter the site to grab your attention?
