A TV channel of your own

March 23rd, 2006

I got this from J.D. Lasica’s book "Darknet", which I strongly recommend you get and read.

One of the most interesting characters Lasica found in the course of researching the new Internet video world is a guy who goes by the name of "Raven."

Raven has his own 24/7 TV channel. It’s called Daytona Beach Live.

Total cash outlay: Studio (zero, it’s in his home), $200 for a Sony Handcam, a few second hand computers and $17.95 a month hosting bill. Right now, it’s a labor of love and Raven pays the rent with a day job, but it’s a demonstration of what’s possible for people with passion.

The site itself is a bit rough and it streams in Real Video only. You can probably see many ways to improve on what he’s doing – but the key thing is…he’s doing it.

A useful resource on his site:

Click on the "Internet TV Portals" link on his site for pointers to two sites that have assembled an extensive collection of links to other Internet television channels:

This is a great expample of why I continue my System Club membership. Ken if I had stumbled accross this show I would have by-passed it quickly. Alternatively, you look at what is being done and challenge us to see what is possible.
    Thank you,
    Steve
PS I enjoyed this content. That is a topic for another post.

I’m on the fence… I want to see the video, but I do NOT want to download Real Player. Last time I installed Real Player on my computer it took over defaults, messed up settings, and constantly nagged me to buy. Am I just paranoid, or does Real still have these annoying characteristics?

    Troy,
It DOES have these annoying characterstics. You’re not imagining it.
Raven dropped me a note explaining his hosting arrangement.
He’s got an “insider” deal on bandwidth because he’s been with his ISP. He also trades advertising for bandwidth… so the $17.95 a month hosting cost that Lasica quotes is going to be hard to duplicate.

All problems solved with Real with Real Alternative – it works brilliantly – spyware and adware free, and completely replaces Real Player.
I would NEVER install Real PLayer again, just download and install this instead.
Just Google Real Alternative or download from here: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Real_Alternative.htm
There’s also a quicktime alternative that is popular

    John,
    Awesome. Thanks.
And for folks who aren’t yet immersed in this “new world,” John just demonstrated a key principle.
There are work-arounds for EVERYTHING and more are coming online daily.
    These are exciting times.
I’m going to put in another ply for J.D. Lasica’s brilliant survey “Darknet.” Invest a little time reading that thing you you’re going to find yourself instantly teleported to where folks like John are coming from.
